Ululation of tortured tongue
Cross jagged lips in lion's head
Screams horror in its nightmare song
Resounding along the ocean bed.
To Bethlehem, yes, to Judea next,
Then Samaria unto the ends of the world
The mysterious hope once caught in text
Splits wide its maw. Now wings unfurled
That prophet Daniel saw and wondered
How such abomination might yet be;
The truest travesty that ever silence sundered
Slouches its way cross the cavernous sea.

This is my response to the W. B. Yeats poem "The Second Coming". Just as that was his reaction to the Great War, seeing the end of an era coming, this is what I see as the end of our era now coming. Life is more hideous and unnatural now, the nobility of the original sphinx image is lost and twisted.
